Новый альбом Batzz in the Belfry – “Glow in the Dark” является замечательной реминисценцией олсдкульного вейв готик рока 80-х годов и закономерным продолженим предыдущего релиза “Sparks fly Upward”. Здесь также есть все, что присуще этому стилю: драм-машина, утопленный в эхо звук, и холодные, порой помпезные, оркестровки. Если вам по душе такая музыка, которая не гонится за современными тенденциями, то этот альбом станет для вас приятным открытием. Несмотря на то, что новый релиз выдержан в привычном ключе для группы, на нем есть свои особенности. В частности, одной из них является клавишная партия в композиции "Scarlet", которая просто очаровывает своей глубиной и самодостаточностью. Также следует выделить трек "Monochrome", напоминающий неспешное музыкальное размышление с нетривиальными гитарными партиями в конце, которые отчего-то местами похожи на начало композиции "Such a Shame" вейв-группы Talk Talk. Разумеется, альбом “Glow in the Dark” не остался без драйвовых вещей, которые вполне бы подошли для танцпола. Среди таковых – "Lost City", которая запомнится своей тяжелой поступью и бесстрастным припевом, энергичная и стремительная "Testify", полная оркестровок, и более отстраненная "For the Dead". На диске присутствует и рождественский трек Still, Still, Still, который привлечет слушателя не только праздничной атмосферой, но и драм-машиной, партии которой напоминают звучание Доктора Аваланча из The Sisters of Mercy. Остальные композиции не менее интересны. В каждой из них чувствуется особая одухотворенность, присущая лишь Batzz in the Belfry
Таким образом, перед нами добротный релиз, в которым в равной степени приличествуют, как драйвовые композиции, годные в том числе для танцпола, так и более медленные и созерцательные номера. Благодаря хорошему балансу между ними, альбом невозможно упрекнуть в отсутствии целостности. Она чувствуется буквально во всем – от структуры треков и четкого построения смысловой части композиций вокруг христианских смыслов, до прямого следования канонам олдскульного вейвого готик рока в музыкальном плане. Не вызывает сомнений тот факт, что для любителей независимого нью-вейва двадцатилетней давности (The Sisters of Mercy, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins и т.д.) альбом “Glow in the Dark” окажется весьма интересным материалом. Возможно, этот релиз один из лучших в своем роде за 2009 год. Другими словами, перед нами пример меланхоличной и чистой музыки, которая, несмотря на некоторую мрачность, содержит в себе яркий свет. Она, определенно, затронет того слушателя, в чьем сердце есть место отзывчивости и доброте.

The new album of “Batzz in the Belfry” – “Glow in the Dark” – could be considered as a nice reminiscence of 80’s old school gothic rock that was created as a continuation of the previous release“Sparks fly Upward”. Here we have all that is associated with this style: a drum machine, a reverberation and cold – sometimes extensive – orchestrations. If you like music that isn’t about modern tendencies, then you’ll count this album as a pleasant discovery. Despite the fact, that the new release is kept in the usual sound concept of the band, it has its own features. Particularly, one of them is the keyboard part on Scarlet track that charms a listener with its depth and self-sufficiency. Also Monochrome track should be mentioned. It reminds of slow and melancholic musical consideration with unusual guitars at the end that have some parallels with the beginning of “Such a Shame” song of the well-known new wave “Talk Talk” band.
Undoubtedly, the “Glow in the Dark” album has more vigorous songs that could be a nice addition to any obscure dancefloor set. Among them there is the “Lost City” song that is notable because of its heavy step and self-assured chorus, the energetic and fast “Testify”track with a lot of orchestrations, and stoic “For The Dead” opus. Also there is a Christmas track on this album that is called “Still, Still, Still” which will attract the listener not only by its festive atmosphere but also by the drum-machine background that is similar to the sound of “Doctor Avalanche” from “The Sisters of Mercy”. Other songs are interesting too and they, certainly, have the special and exclusive signature of Batzz in the Belfry.
Thereby, we have a nice release where there are a lot of different tracks from dance and rock-orientated songs towards the slower and more contemplative ones. Due to the fair balance between them, the album seems to be very solid. This harmonicity finds itself everywhere - from the track structure and Christian (or you can call it moral) lyrical concept of the songs to the direct observance of old school goth rock principles. Obviously, the fans of independent 80’s new wave sound (in the way of The Sisters of Mercy, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins bands etc) will be glad to have “Glow in the Dark” album in their collection. Perhaps, it’s one of the best 2009 releases in its own and special category. In other words, it’s a kind and melancholic music with a dark background where there is always a place for a bright spot of light. It will definitely touch you if there’s some responsiveness and purity inside you.
